Dorian Gray. While he fancies himself quite dapper, Dorian is in fact a rather short uncomely young man in his late 20s. He has a perplexing personality in which behind an optimistic outlook and a full artistic embrace of film lies a strain of cruelty, vandalism, and murder. He has recently come under the influence of the New Hedonism courtesy of his dear friend and mentor, Lord Henry. Lord Henry. In his 50s, an erudite gentleman who travels widely collecting rare books, paintings, and other works of art. Having recently encountered a volume of À Rebours, by Huysmans, he has embraced the New Hedonism in his manner, outlook, and especially, his flamboyant, abstract attire. Dr. Basil Hallward. A very serious and somewhat strict man in his 50s, he is a formally trained doctor of ophthalmology who has embraced the many new technologies involving electricity and radio waves. Through his correspondence with Maxwell and Hertz he has applied these new sciences to his practice of ophthalmology. Sibyl Vane. A beautiful woman in her 20s who has just begun a promising career in opera, having been the benefactor of Dorian Gray's affection and support. She believes her love of Dorian is fully reciprocated.
