TÉARMA IOMLÁN is set in a possibly not-too-distant dystopian future in which the anti-abortion movement has acquired full power over the judiciary. A special police force, Life Enforcement, has been established to locate and arrest women who have become pregnant and are exhibiting intent to end their pregnancy. Once in custody, they are brought before a judge at the Life Court of New Dakota, to determine guilt and to impose confinement for a period of nine months, until birth. There are many such facilities, Sanctuary is better than most.
This is a surrealist-noir story of two sisters, Paula and Beth, who are swept up in the fast moving social and legal changes of the time. Paula is preparing to visit and stay with Beth, who has illegally acquired the medication to end her unwanted pregnancy. But it is Paula who finds herself at Life Court, before Judge White and her assistant Mr. Orange. Over the course of the interrogation Judge White is eventually convinced that Paula has not had an abortion, and has in fact never been pregnant. After a stern warning against using birth control it appears that Paula may be freed. But Judge White now wants to know about her sister, Beth. In the intensifying interrogation Paula must face one of her deepest fears, and Mr. Orange brings forth the box. Paula, exhausted and terrified, succumbs. Through a series of flashbacks/forwards, we witness the interrogation and join Beth at Sanctuary. Women are kept there in groups of three, Gestapods, who are expected to deliver at about the same time. They are overseen by their Tender. Mornings are devoted to group study of The Way, lead by Tender. Evenings are for video instruction on why the world is to now be such. Kept in a drug-induced light stupor, the women sleep for much of the afternoon period known as Health. Paula is allowed to have a single visitor from the outside while at Sanctuary. The visit is allowed at 20 weeks into the pregnancy, what Tender calls lár téarma. Paula visits Beth, who she has not seen since her confinement, and learns the full truth of the situation her sister faces. Time passes as we follow the Gestapod through group study, video learning, and their visitations. Beth gives birth. We finally join her and Tender as we learn the future that Beth actually faces. |
